What will be exhibited (Kite, Ground-station, etc…)?
It is an autonomously controlled Wind Drone. It comes together with a computer as a ground control station and an interesting hack for a ground station of the tether.
What is special about the exhibited system/object?
It is entirely open source and open hardware. Everybody is invited to contribute to the development and to port it to different platforms. We expect that this is the cheapest Airborne Wind Energy Device which is flying regularly. In addition, it contains logging of all sensor and control data and a full flight analysis tool kit.
What vision does your company/group have for the exhibited system/object? What is the vision of the company/group, in general?
We are mostly university researchers, and the AWEsome wind drone has been mostly developed in one Masters Thesis and one Bachelor Thesis. The main aim is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas amongst university research groups and startups, as well as to decrease the hurdles for emerging startups to start their first wind drone and to train themselves on flight operations. All this is made possible using the open source approach.
In addition, we expect that open source is the right approach for optimizing the process of certification of flight operations through governing bodies such as EASA.
